ARTIST’S BIO

David Noguchi’s interest in sculpture began while in college studying mechanical engineering. His first big influence and what started him on the path to want to make sculpture was Constantin Brancusi. David’s father got him a summer job working for a metal fabricator to pay his way through school. Science, technology and their relationship with the visual arts always fascinated him. He knew that eventually he would make art utilizing his welding skills. However, his first career of over twenty years was as a celebrated Director of Photography in Chicago. David was a pioneer visual effects and motion control cinematographer. When film special effects went digital, he chose to follow his heart and honed his welding skills, eventually landing a gig with renowned sculptor Richard Hunt, who he worked with for almost twenty years. He soon began creating sculpture, making his first piece a couple of years after starting with Richard. David uses a combination of technologies that help him bring a unique style to his work. One of which included modifying an English Wheel to help him shape and form metal.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My influence and understanding comes from the Modernist tradition. I believe that in art, there are no rules, except for the rules that we, individually, choose to follow as artists. I believe that sculpture is simply another form of communication that doesn't necessarily contain words. I believe in “truth in materials” which is why I’ve chosen stainless steel and bronze to be my medium. I consider these metals to be exotic and naturally beautiful. My goal is to recreate, in sculpture, an abstract moment in time, usually derived from figurative, but really anything from life itself. At the same time, my goal is not to have people see my exact vision of what the sculpture is. Rather, I want the observer to think about what they are looking at when viewing my work and for the viewer to see what they see and be what it is they want it to be. If I’ve stimulated the viewer’s imagination even in the slightest way, I’ve succeeded.
